Tiling and earth substrates
Earth and clay plaster surfaces are in principle unsuitable as a substrate for tiling. In certain circumstance, however, tiles can be applied to surfaces not directly exposed to splash water such as skirting tiles. The clay plaster of the wall surface (no deco clay plaster or fine-finish plaster) needs to be hardened by multiple applications of a deep primer and the tiles then affixed using a flexible tile adhesive. This is not suitable for wet areas as water can penetrate the grouting and weaken the cohesive strength of the clay plaster despite the primer. In most cases, a panel material or chemically-curing plaster is a more suitable substrate for applying tiles to. In addition, the tiling of clay plaster is not advisable as the positive properties of the clay plaster surface are then covered over by the tile.

Timber–render junctions in exposed half-timbered constructions
The external render of exposed half-timbered façades is particularly susceptible to weathering. Water can penetrate the façade at the junction between the timber member and render and may cause the vapour permeable facing render to separate from the softer earth substrate below. For this reason, only application class I earth bricks may be used for such façades as they are least susceptible to expansion or shrinkage. Joints between the timber framework and the render should not be sealed with acrylic or silicon mastic sealants as these prevent any moisture in the structure from evaporating. If water is trapped within the wall, this can cause the timber frame members to rot.
