Vapour barrier
A vapour barrier is usually applied to the inner face of an insulating layer to prevent the transmission of dampness or moisture in the form of water vapour.

Vapour retarding layer
In contrast to the vapour barrier, a vapour retarding layer does permit a limited degree of moisture transmission. The vapour retarding foil or paper reduces the diffusion of water vapour and the passage of air from the interior into the insulating layer of the building. It is usually applied to the inner face of the insulating layer.
